On busy days that queue can take a while as tour groups and cruise coaches arrive from Fira and the port, so coming with your ticket already in hand saves the wait in the sun before you reach the cool, roofed ruins.

You choose the date and an hourly time slot, and your ticket is valid for a single entry during that hour on that day. Just arrive within your slot window and show your mobile ticket at the gate; last entry is about 30 minutes before closing.

Full admission to the Archaeological Site of Akrotiri — the excavated Bronze Age town under its protective roof, with its multi-storey buildings, paved streets, drainage system and the great storage jars, walked on elevated walkways. It does not include the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, where the original frescoes and finds are displayed; that is a separate site and ticket.

The celebrated Theran wall-paintings — the Spring Fresco, the Boxing Boys, the Fishermen and others — were discovered here at Akrotiri, but the original frescoes are now displayed in museums for protection, above all the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira and the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. On the site you walk through the very buildings in which they were found and see the town they decorated. Many visitors pair the ruins with the Fira museum to see the paintings themselves.

Akrotiri is at the southern tip of Santorini, near Akrotiri village and the Red Beach, about 15 km from Fira. Local KTEL buses run from the Fira bus station to Akrotiri, and by car or taxi it is roughly a 25–30 minute drive from Fira, a little longer from Oia. Many island tours include the site as a stop.

Like Pompeii, Akrotiri was a thriving town buried by a volcanic eruption — here the great eruption of Thera around 1600 BC, which smothered the settlement in ash and pumice and preserved it in extraordinary detail. Multi-storey buildings, streets, drains, furniture impressions and everyday objects survived, giving a vivid snapshot of Bronze Age life. Because the culture was closely linked to Minoan Crete, it is often called the "Minoan Pompeii" as well as the "Bronze Age Pompeii."

Book the first hourly slot after opening, or one of the last slots before closing, to be ahead of the island tours and cruise groups that arrive through the middle of the day. The site itself is roofed and shaded, so heat inside is not the issue it is at open-air ruins, but the ticket area and the roads are busiest at midday. An early or late slot gives you a calmer walk among the buildings.

Most visitors spend about 1 to 1.5 hours on site, following the walkways through the excavated town. Add time if you want to read the interpretive signs closely or pair the visit with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, the Red Beach nearby, or a wider island tour.

No. The standard entry ticket is not personalised and needs no passport or name — just show your mobile ticket at the gate. (Reduced and free-entry categories set by the operator may require ID at the gate; our ticket is standard full admission.)

Largely, and more so than most Greek archaeological sites. Because the excavation is roofed and toured on elevated walkways and ramps rather than open ancient ground, surfaces are firm and much of the town can be seen with ease, though there are some slopes, steps and level changes. Visitors with limited mobility can see a good deal; it is worth checking current conditions with staff on arrival.

The site is open daily in season, with reduced days or hours possible in winter. Summer hours run roughly 08:00–20:00 and winter hours are shorter, with timed entry by the hour and last entry about 30 minutes before closing. Hours can change on public holidays and seasonally, so confirm on the day.
